Michigan Department of Transportation released an impressive bounce and scatter study.

The study measured how much material landed outside the target area while testing out three different variables.

  • Truck Speed (25 mph, 35 mph, and 45 mph),
  • Salt-delivering Equipment (Y-chutes and rear-cross conveyors)
  • Salt Type (treated vs untreated road salt).

The salt was applied in a test section of road 100 feet long, 48 feet wide and divided up into 12 four-foot lanes.

MDOT discovered that the most effective treatment that they tested was apply treated salt. with a cross conveyor delivery stystem, from a truck traveling at 25 mph.

The least effective treatment was a Y-chute delivery system, from a truck traveling at 45 mph.

Take a look at the study to learn more.  The Appendix B. section is especially informative.
